Inquirer wins 14 awards at NYPA annual contest
The Scarsdale Inquirer won 14 awards in the 2010 New York Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were presented at the community newspaper association’s annual convention in Saratoga Springs last weekend. The contest entries were judged by the Arizona Newspapers Association. There were 2,634 entries from 171 newspapers and 432 awards were presented in 60 categories.
The Inquirer, along with sister papers The Rivertowns Enterprise and The Record-Review, finished fourth in total contest points for newspaper chains, with the trio being the smallest group among the top five.
In the sports coverage category, the Inquirer took first place. Judges especially liked sports editor Todd Sliss’s “Teammates” story about Scarsdale Youth Football’s inclusive philosophy. Overall the judges said, “Good leads, fascinating content.”
Sliss placed third in the sports feature story category for his piece about the barefoot runners at the 2010 Scarsdale 15K: “This is a fun approach to a race story.”
Photographer Jim MacLean took home first place for his sports action photo of Scarsdale golfer Robert Gelber: “Perfect timing on this shot. Nice framing.”
MacLean also took home second place in the picture story category for his comprehensive look at Scarsdale’s International Day: “Eye-catching! Love all the action shots.” The photo story layout was designed by Eileen Farrell.
As usual, feature story was the most entered category in the contest, and therefore the toughest. Traci Dutton Ludwig placed third for “a very worthy effort” for her profile of Quaker Ridge’s Mike Gindi, a do-it-all dad who teaches his kids hands-on skills and self-reliance by example.
The Inquirer prides itself on its strong editorial pages and took third place for editorials written by Linda Leavitt and Ilene Nechamkin. The judges specifically liked the Dec. 10 editorial, “Our mission,” saying: “Liked how readers were brought into the conversation and how the editorial explained a process of news coverage that is not always understood outside the newsroom. Excellent public service.”
The Inquirer won third place for headline writing. Judges said, “To the point, entertaining, inviting,” singling out Debra Banerjee’s Arts & Entertainment headlines.
In the special sections category, the Inquirer took first and second places for Back to School (“Great content, informative … Good editorials and advertising”) and Kids! (“Lots of good information. Well laid out — good ads”), respectively. The sections were edited by Sliss and designed by Ann Marie Rezen, with editorial and production assistance by Sandy Greene and Ann Marie Speruzzi. The sections featured the writing of Banerjee, Ludwig, Jackie Lupo, Eve Marx, Heather Murray, John Roche and Laurie Sullivan and photos by MacLean.
Sliss and Rezen completed a sweep of the special sections category by placing third for the Record-Review’s edition of Ink: “Featuring works of teens is a great concept.”
The Inquirer’s Ink cover, featuring a photo by Edgemont’s Dakota Doukas and designed by Rezen, won second place for Best Special Section Cover: “Intriguing photo.”
Designer Kathy Potter won four awards for her Inquirer ads. She placed first for best house ad/ad campaign, second and third for best color ad created by the newspaper for the Scarsdale Flower Shop and Industry 80 Salon, respectively, and second for best advertising campaign-large space for Pamela Robbins.
In addition, Potter won five awards for the Record-Review and placed second for the John J. Evans Award for Advertising Excellence: first for best special section advertising for Kids!, first for best advertising campaign-large space, first and second for best large space ad and third for best advertising campaign-small space.
