Year in review: BUSINESS

Hope triumphs as new businesses open in 2010

By LINDA LEAVITT

The large number of new businesses in the Scarsdale-Edgemont area offers consolation to those who feared the effects of the recession would linger long.

Soul Cycle opened at 7 Popham Road in early January, offering full body cycling workouts.

Mayfair Court women’s clothing store closed on Harwood Court. But two others opened: Cheryl Isanberg of Cheryl’s Closet in the Golden Horseshoe brought Etc. Boutique to Harwood Court and Aspire Boutique came to Garth Road.

A group of Scarsdale mothers started Collegistics, a business helping parents and kids with the college application process.

The Cheesery of Hartsdale closed, but Pat Hall, widow of the store’s owner, brought her popular cheeses and smoked fish to Joe

Yogo Joy opened in the village center this year.

Floriano’s expanded Enrico’s Bakery across the street in time for the Jewish holidays in September.

Greenburgh residents complaining that Con Ed’s aggressive “vegetation management” policies were destroying their quality of life urged officials to rein the utility’s tree cutting.

In May, Martin Ginsburg’s Christie Place project received the first-place economic development award from the New York Council of Mayors.

Engel & Volckers opened an international real estate office in the renovated former home of the Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps at Heathcote Five Corners in May.

Paragon Arts Events brought its Fine Arts Festival to the village in June, upsetting the Scarsdale Art Association, which feared it would detract attention and support from the annual show and sale of local artists’ work held every September, and inciting the ire of merchants who felt the event blocked access to their stores and hurt sales on Father’s Day weekend. The Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce later attributed the problems to a failure of communication with merchants.

To the relief of overheated Scarsdalians in July, Yogo Joy opened in the Harwood Building, selling pump-it-yourself and top-it-yourself frozen yogurt. Go Greenberry is now satisfying frozen yogurt cravings on Garth Road.

Regulars at Michael’s Gourmet, a fixture in the village for decades, were upset when the Spencer Place shop closed unexpectedly in May. They were cheered by the opening of Eric Korn’s Goodlife Gourmet on the site in August.

Also in August, the Stellaris hospital group settled a dispute with Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield. Stellaris was demanding higher rates than the insurance company thought were reasonable. The dispute kept Blue Cross-insured patients out of Stellaris hospitals for four months.

In September, Better Homes and Gardens Rand Realty acquired Merritt Associates, a family-run business that had operated for more than 75 years in Scarsdale.

Rhodadendron, a boutique selling women’s accessories and gifts, opened on Harwood Court in time for the Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce’s annual sidewalk sale the last weekend in July.

Drew Schlesinger of Edgemont was named manager of the new “green” Hotel Intercontinental New York in Times Square.

City style came to the suburbs with Industry 80 Salon on Brook Street and Numi on Harney Road. Golden Day Spa offers a chance to recharge batteries on Wilmot Road.

Performers Edge Dance opened on Grey Rock road.

Renovations of the Last Licks “sports bar for kids” added cakes to the ice cream and candy menu in September.

Metro Behavioral Health Associates, specialists in eating disorders, opened an office at 2 Overhill Road in Scarsdale.

Robin Judson of Edgemont opened Robin Judson Partners, a financial recruiting firm, in Manhattan.

Scarsdale grads Stephanie Adler and Ronee Rosenkrantz launched an online consignment shop, The Junk in Your Trunk.

Trish Frohman of Scarsdale and Valerie Stone of Edgemont opened Candy Rox in Rye.

Cornerstone Children’s Center opened on Garth Road in June and Citibabes closed its family activity center on Depot Place at the end of the year, but announced partnerships with Mohawk School and Camp and Equinox to continue some programs.

The year saw the arrival of new chain stories on Central Avenue — Walgreens drug store and ShopRite supermarket in the Midway Shopping Center. Local diners acquired more options with the opening of Bistro 808 on Scarsdale Avenue where Millennio used to be and Sea Southeast Asian cuisine on Garth Road.

On Central Avenue, ZaZa made its debut at the former Rustico, joining Rossacove Pizzeria, Eldorado III diner and Hurricane Grill and Wings, formerly Mitty’s. Edgemont’s popular Candlelight Inn added a take-out facility.

New in Hartsdale is Vega Mexican Cuisine and Amendola’s replaced Cassano’s. The Hartsdale Market closed.

Be True Yoga came to the Harwood Building and Christie Place “green” Cleaners opened guess where.

The year saw the closing of Pazzam Jewelry in Harwood Court and Rush jewelry on East Parkway.
