Local resident Nicole Lerner, a junior at Scarsdale High School, has been awarded the 2019 Maria Jones Scholarship Award for excellence and promise in the field of dance. The scholarship is named to honor Maria Jones, a former advanced-level ballet instructor who retired from the Mid-Westchester JCC Dance School in 2003. Formal announcement of the award was made at the JCC Dance School’s annual Westchester Theatre of Dance concert March 30.
Lerner, a JCC Dance School student for the past seven years, has performed in numerous WTD productions, portraying everything from a Street Child in “Gaite Parisienne” to a Rose Vine in “Beauty and the Beast.” Most recently she performed the Spanish variation in “Land of the Sweets.” A great character dancer, Lerner said she gets great pleasure “being able to put myself into someone else’s shoes for a moment.” As a self-described “spunky girl,” Lerner serves as an officer of the Scarsdale Speech and Debate Team and a children’s program coordinator for Young Judaea, a Zionist youth group. She also volunteers as an assistant to a weekly kindergarten ballet class at the JCC.
