With the warm weather finally here, have you noticed how many cars in Scarsdale are parked and idling with their engines running and the AC on ... people just sitting in their cars while talking on the phone or checking their messages?

A couple of things about that that no one knows.

First there is an anti-idling law in Westchester County forbidding the idling of gas engines for more than three minutes when the temperature is above 30 degrees. Except for emergency vehicles.

Second, emissions from car engines pollute our air. Seriously.

They contain substances like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, formaldehyde, hydrocarbons, particulate matter and other noxious substances.

Do we want to breathe that air, and do we want our children breathing that air?

Stand behind a car that has its engine idling and see how it feels.

We really need to think of other ways and other places to make phone calls and check our messages, rather than sitting in our idling cars and adding to air pollution.

We need to care.
