Scarsdale Adult Softball: Launchers win championship in inaugural season

The Launchers won the Scarsdale World Series their first year in the league.

The Scarsdale Recreation Department crowned the Scarsdale World Series adult softball champions Aug. 10 at Crossway 2. The first-year Launchers won the regular season title with a 9-3 record and took the championship over Leone Real Estate.

Leone R.E. forced a second game in the double-elimination tournament finals by topping the Launchers 4-3 the morning of Aug. 10. With a 5-3 win in the second game, the Launchers were crowned champs.

Leone R.E scored a run in each of the first three innings of the opener for a 3-0 lead on the Launchers. Mike Hodges delivered a clutch two-out RBI for the first run of the game. The second run scored on fielding miscues, while the third was another two-out hit, this time by Jake Nathanson.

The bottom of the fourth provided excitement as the Launchers tied the game with three runs of their own. Scott Galst led off with a double and was driven in by Jacob Brief. Andrew Fialkow had an RBI single and George Samwick tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

The offenses went quiet until the top of the seventh when Leone R.E. scored the go-ahead and eventual winning run. Vin Cavallo led off with a double. He advanced to third base on a fly out to left field by Greg Scacchi and driven home on a sacrifice fly to right field by Christian Waterhouse.

Leone R.E. held the Launchers to a one, two, three inning in the bottom of the seventh to force a winner-take-all finale.

After a 10-minute break, the teams were back at it again. And again, Leone R.E. jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Rob Burns led off with a single and was doubled home by D.J. Fuhrman, who later scored on a sac fly by Nathanson.

The Launchers tied the game in the top of the second inning. Matt Daniel had the lead-off single this time and scored on a Seth Thornton triple. Jack Callahan singled to drive in Thornton.

Leone answered with a run in the bottom of the third. Jeff Leone doubled to lead off, Burns grounded out to advance the runner and a Fuhrman groundout to second base scored Leone from third.

The fourth through six innings were scoreless and the game again came down to the wire. The Launchers stayed alive by tying the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Fialkow led off with a single and was tripled home by Samwick. With no outs, however, Leone R.E. kept the runner on third from scoring with good defense.

In the bottom of the seventh, Leone R.E. had runners on the corners with one out — the winning run on third — but could not get the runner home.

After both teams went in order in the eighth inning, the Launchers broke the tie in the top of the ninth. Again it was Fialkow getting things started with a single. Callahan advanced the runner with a fly ball deep to left. David Love singled to put runners on first and third. Samwick singled to drive in the eventual game-winner and Kiran Ramachandran drove in the insurance run to make it 5-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Launchers kept Leone R.E. off the board to secure the win.

The adult softball season kicked off June 4 with games scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the summer. Ten teams competed, with the top eight qualifying for the postseason.
